A dull, soft background noise?
« on: June 21, 2010, 06:36:10 PM »
I have noticed yesterday and today, perhaps more than before, a kind of dull, soft background noise, which does not “go away” by changing programme on my Phonak Audeo Smart IXs  but only when I remove my HAs. Is this something usual?

Its not - thank God - a new type of tinnitus, but I'm a bit mystified where this low, whirring sound comes from.

Hi Rigastel,

It sounds unusual to have that in the background.  Was it there when you first got the hearing aids or has it recently started?

If its something recent, there could be a few reaons:

1. The reciever of the hearing aids have malfunctioned.
2. There is a new sound in the environment that you are not used to.

If it's the first point, ask your Audiologist to replace the recievers and see if thats the case.

If it's the second point, Go to different environments and listen for the sound (ie. libraries, other houses etc). If it's still there then it's probably due to Point 1.

Let me know how it goes.   8)

Thanks for the advice. I'll ask my hearing professional to check out the receivers.

It had occured to me that perhaps this low background noise, might have been due to batteries (non-mercury?) which were somehow not up to mark. Does that make any sense? Or is this just a "layman's" imagination? Make no mistake. My Phonaks are really awesome hearing instruments. Its just that I have been noticing this phenomenon which I hadn't observed before.

Since I posted this thread for the first time at the end of June, I have had to live with this problem, which at times became a source of discomfort, like a newly invented form of tinnitus. My hearing professional has send my (otherwise excellent) hearing aids back to Phonak to be checked, and I hope to get them back next week, having had the problem resolved.
